“World Funk” featuring:
DJ Le Spam & the Spam All Stars
(Miami)
W/ DJ Vinnie Esparza
"World Funk" night is a chance to acknowledge the
many ethnic flavors prevalent in the history of funk. Funk, may
have been born in the United States, but its roots lie in Africa,
the Carribean, and Latin America. Therefore, its development
into a truly international form with an ethnic branch to match
every country, was not only logical, but inevitable. From Fela
Kuti, Manu DiBango, and Hugh Masakela in Africa, to Black Sugar,
Jorge Ben, and Osibisa in South America to Lafayette Afro Rock
Band, James Taylor Quartet and Poets of Rhythym, in Europe, George
Clinton's idea has been proven valid; we ARE "one nation
under a groove." Concurrently, the melting pot of the United
States has added a variety of ethnic spice to the funk pot. Today
the cross-pollenation continues with artists like like Ozomatli,
Los Amigos Invisibles, Kinky, O-MAYA and this night’s featured
artist, Miami’s Spam All Stars

About the Artists:
The Spam All-Stars (Miami):
Though the Spam All Stars seem to have burst upon the national music scene
very recently, they have actually been around for 10 years. Formed by DJ
Le Spam (Andrew Yeomanson) in 1993, the group took a long hiatus when Yeomanson
went on tour (playing guitar) with Nil Lara. In 1998, he reformed the group
and set to the task of proving that Miami could be known for superb instrumental
dance music. Designed to mimic Le Spam’s worldly funk influences, the
Spam All Stars combine funk, jazz, and electronica over a poly-ethnic Latin
backbeat. Their approach and sheer energy attracted the attention of Phish
pianist Page McConnel, leading to several tours with McConnel’s Vida
Blue project. This landed them a prestigious monthly residency at SOB’s
in New York City. With the Vida Blue tour behind them, and a new album ahead,
Spam Allstars Contra Los Roboticos Mutantes, the time seems perfect for you
to catch the Spam All Stars at San Francisco Funk Fest.

DJ Vinnie Esparza (San Francisco)
For more than a decade, Vinnie Esparza has dedicated his life to the preservation
and reinvention of funk. From his many DJ parties devoted to the genre (“Hella
Tight” being the present effort) to his selection work at the seminal
record depot “Groove Merchant” to his founding of a label devoted
to funky beats “Dis-Joint Records” Vinnie remains firmly entrenched
on the frontlines of the funk. And while he is the one that Vanguard Records
called on to comb its acid jazz into the “Loose & Juicy” compilation
(whose U.F.O. remake helped break Fatboy Slim) it’s his rare skills
as a club Dj that will be on display at the Elbo Room.
